Japanese joinery bed frames may have popped up on your social feeds recently—and if they haven’t yet, they likely will now that you clicked on this article. (Sorry!) These bolt-free beds are made from notched wood pieces that slide and click together to make a stable frame. Think Jenga, but with really nice, sleek wooden furniture. The advantages are many, starting with easy assembly that can be done in just a few minutes and without any tools.
Thuma is the leading brand in this space, and we love its product lineup—several members of the WIRED Reviews team have Thuma beds, and all rave about them. However, they’re not cheap. A Thuma bed frame starts at $845 for a twin frame with no headboard, and the king-sized Thuma signature bed that Reviews team director Martin Cizmar says is one of the best products he’s ever tested costs $2,500.
I’ve always found Thuma-style Japanese joinery bed frames to be fascinating. It’s a pretty easy way to channel your Bob the Builder alter-ego, not to mention the finished bed frame looks stunning in its simplicity. However, I am always on the lookout for products at the intersection of high quality and low price. I like to think of it as a term TikTok influencer Nina Poole calls a “duperoonie.” But in place of skincare, we’re discussing sleep products. I was curious to see if there were any contenders out there that would give Thuma a run for its money, so I researched and tested, and I’m excited to present my findings to the class.
Be sure also to check out our guides on the best mattresses we’ve tested, as well as the best pillows and bedsheets. You’ll need something to put on your new frame, after all!

Best Overall
DreamCloud
Bamboo Platform Bed Frame
I’m a longtime fan of DreamCloud mattresses, so it came as no surprise that the brand’s Japanese joinery bed frame is an excellent product. Just like the mattress, numerous thoughtful details in this frame made it immediately stand out, so much so that I will be keeping it around for long-term testing to try with a larger variety of beds.
DreamCloud made the setup of this frame seamlessly idiot-proof (@me). Each piece is labeled, and when it comes time to actually put it all together, take a gander at each of the long pieces’ endpoints. If you look closely at the joints where they intersect on the ends, you will see that holes have been drilled into the top and bottom pieces. Accompanying small rods are attached to the boards that are fitted into it, and it’s a secondary mechanism that ensures stability. I find this to be impressive because the beams neatly stack into the grooves carved into the ends. It is, in a word, crisp. It’s a tiny detail, but they managed to keep the frame virtually silent when I put a mattress on it or moved around in my sleep. I didn’t notice any shaking, either. Another excellent feature of this frame is the center stability beam (crucial to prevent long-term sagging), which slides in last. This allows you to avoid nesting it in before closing the frame, unlike some other Japanese joinery models from different brands. It’s far more convenient.
Lining up the slats is the most challenging part of the process. You have to make sure everything is perfectly even before you go with the flow; instead, go with the Velcro as the boards have it attached on the ends. However, Dreamcloud thought of that, too, so similar wooden rods to those found on the end pieces of the boards can be found in the center of the bed, where the slatted frames are inserted. They’re about the width of a pencil. Pop those slats in, unroll, and go. You don’t have to get a headboard with this frame, but DreamCloud provided me one anyway. There are two square openings located inside the top beam of the frame, so right where your head would be. The headboard slides into these internal slots, which are shaped to hold the end pieces, holding it upright securely. Foam block stickers are included to be attached last, so your wall doesn’t get scuffed up. All that, and still no tools necessary. Down to the details, people! And this detail you don’t want to skip on—it’s around $600 for a queen at the time of this writing. The headboard costs $300 extra, but all in, that’s still far cheaper than luxury alternatives. You’ll also have two stain options to choose from: natural or a very pretty walnut.

Best Wood Variety
Silk & Snow
Wooden Bed Frame
Silk & Snow is another brand that I hold in high regard. Every time I’ve tested a mattress from the brand, it consistently manages to pack in quality for the price. This platform bed frame was no exception. There are two options: natural rubberwood and a cortado acacia wood. I opted for the latter. I thought that the stain was stunning, with a richness akin to a lovely latte. However, I really appreciate that you have options here, not just with the wood stain color, but also with the actual hardwood itself.
This frame arrived in four separate boxes. I liked this approach because it protected the integrity of the wood stain during shipping. Every other option on this list was packed into one box, not unlike a mattress-in-a-box, but heavier and longer. I actually preferred this route, as every box was also labeled for easy setup. Like the DreamCloud frame, Silk & Snow’s frame does not require tools or hardware to set up—it’s a strictly wooden composition. One thing I found out the hard way: ensure that the center beam is within the perimeter of the frame before fully closing it off. Then the slats are placed into the internal notches on the side rails, and it’s ready for a mattress. I had no issues with noise, shaking, or feeling unstable. It supported a mattress just fine, and I am still truly enamored with how the wood stain looked amidst my studio’s decor.
However, I do a lot of testing, so I’m constantly setting up and taking down mattresses, frames, and bedding. This is where having two people will be crucial, as I decided to do it all by myself for the sake of time, to the detriment of the frame. The frame got badly scratched up around the slatted portions where the corners of the boards stack together due to my awkward solo assembly motions. I doubt you’ll be doing this as much as I do, but even if you do move down the line, this part was a bit disappointing to see. Despite this, I’m still considering purchasing one of my own because I loved how it looked and performed that much.

TIRED- Scratched up more easily than expected. You probably won’t be taking apart and putting together your frame as often as we do, but it is more delicate than other frames tested.

Straightforward Design
Puffy
Zen Bed Frame
The Zen uses solid pine wood with a walnut stain finish. It was the only frame of the bunch that required the use of tools at the ends of the provided center support beam. This hardware includes some screws and a simple hex wrench. I’m not someone who considers herself handy with these types of things, but I didn’t find it to be a pitfall.
That wasn’t the only unique feature that this frame centralized—quite literally, in this case. The slatted boards that support your mattress were one piece that was unrolled onto the frame. This I found interesting, as the other frames broke this portion of the frame into two parts. One makes it a lot quicker, albeit heavier to work with. These slatted boards were also polished like the rest of the frame, which prevented me from getting a surprise splinter. I can’t say the same for the others, which used unfinished wood. The downfall is that the weight of the mattress is meant to keep them in place, as there are no notches carved inside the side rails to keep them from moving, nor Velcro that the edges of the boards can stick to. If you have an all-foam mattress, be aware that the frame may become a bit of a slip-and-slide, especially during setup, and boards may become unevenly placed.
I’m focused on this area of the frame because Puffy claims that the Zen can support any type of mattress and can support up to 1,000 pounds, thanks to the solid wood construction. The Puffy Zen frame arrived in two ginormous, heavy boxes. Everything was clearly labeled, and it took eight minutes or so to set up—and that’s including throwing a Puffy mattress on top. This frame is simple, straightforward, strong, and very sleek to look at.

Easiest Setup
Birch
Madison Bed Frame
The Birch frame was the most basic of the frames I tested. I was really excited about this one, because the wood is sourced from the land of the pines, otherwise known as my home state of North Carolina. Poplar is a durable hardwood and Southern yellow pine is one of the harder pine woods (I can attest to this because of my eighth-grade science project, testing regional wood durability). The manufacturing partner is a Certified Member of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The legs are made of a completely different wood, Appalachian Maple. It also uses a soy-based resin to remain completely formaldehyde-free.
It arrived in two boxes, and setup was quick and easy (mainly because I made my husband do it, I was over setting up frames at this point). If I had decided to do it on my own, I would have been more than fine, as the step-by-step instructions were the most thorough of the bunch. There were written descriptions and pictures, so it’s hard to mess this up. Plus, no tools are needed to get this frame up and running. The outer boards were polished to maintain the gorgeous hue of the pine wood. However, be cautious when handling the inner slatted board portions. Of course, this is when I decided to jump in and help, but this wood is not finished. I got a small splinter, and was not a happy camper. Next was setting up the bed and actually sleeping on it for a week—the standard amount of time I test mattresses. The first few days, this thing creaked and moaned like crazy. It didn’t feel stable, and I was shaken if I moved around in the slightest. By the end of the week, it seemed to fall into place and settle, so I no longer picked up on this noise or motion.
I don’t want to discount this as a possible option, though, because the wood quality was what I wanted it to be, and so was the overall price. But let’s say you’re looking for a cheaper option for setting up a guest room, upgrading your teen’s room, first apartment furnishing on a budget, or a vacation rental—this could work well for you.

The Original
Thuma
Classic Bed + Pillowboard
Here’s the thing: Thuma is still a Japanese joinery bed frame. Therefore, we have to include it on this list. I’d be remiss not to. While I can vouch that the above options serve as credible dupes, many of my teammates feel that nothing beats the original in this case.
Thuma’s Classic Bed Frame is made from upcycled, sturdy rubberwood that comes in four finishes: walnut, natural, espresso, and gray. You can also opt for different variations with the headboard, including all-wood, a pillowboard (Italian wool and foam), or a hybrid of the two. The design’s not only beautiful, but certifications, such as UL GreenGuard Gold and CertiPur-US (if you opt for the pillowboard), back it.
WIRED Reviewer Julian Chokkattu has had his Thuma frame for several years now, and notes that it takes next to no time to set up. He also loves that there was no creaking or sliding from the jump—just a strong sense of security while sleeping on it.

How We Tested
Just like with the best mattresses we regularly test, each frame required a week of testing (not including naps) to evaluate night-over-night performance. This also allowed time for the frames to settle into place and perform alongside the bed each was paired with.
How Do I Set up a Japanese Joinery Bed Frame?
Your bed frame should come with installation instructions, regardless of whether it features Japanese joinery construction. In the same vein, I recommend that you have someone assist you with the setup. As I mentioned, as part of my Silk & Snow bed frame woes, you are mitigating the risk of bumping and scratching your new furniture. Do as I say, not as I do.
Are These Bed Frames Better Than Thuma’s?
I wouldn’t say better, just different. Each brand offers its own approach to creating a bed frame that adheres to the Japanese joinery method. This could include the type of wood used, the stains offered, the types of headboards you can pair it with, where it was manufactured, and, of course, the price. They all have their merits, but many of my teammates will forever be ride-or-die Thuma loyalists. I’m just here to provide you with options.
